Beautiful Demeter - Goddes of harvest and agriculture, the circle of life and death, and of moral codes - decorates this large shell cameo from the Victorian era. She is holding a long torch in one hand and a sheath of grain in the other, symbols for the Diety both in Greek and in Roman mythology. (In Rome she was knows as Ceres). Around the torch, which here is held upside down, you can see how the shell has been carved to shape smoke.
Set in a frame made from 14 carat yellow gold, with later brooch findings in back.
A rather large cameo, measuring 5,5 x 4,5 cm. Weight 18,83 grams.
This brooch has been loved and worn and the carved cameo is smoother over certain areas from the wear. The brooch findings have been replaced and the frame partially reinforced, you can see traces of solder next to the fastening mechanism. Pin is not gold. This is naturally not visible when they brooch is worn. No cracks or nicks, so the general condition is very good.
